I use a unique approach that makes learning to draw fun and accessible for everyone, no matter your background.

Sample Lesson & Activity Overview
Activity: Comic Book Cover Drawing
Objective: Students will design a dynamic comic book cover featuring their own superhero in an action pose with a detailed background.
Materials:
- Pencils, erasers, rulers
- Comic cover templates (optional)
- Black fine liners or markers
- Colored pencils or markers
- Reference images of comic book covers
Lesson Breakdown:
- Introduction & overview of compositional techniques
- Analyze different comic book cover types and discuss what makes them eye-catching (bold colors, dramatic poses, backgrounds).
- Explain key elements: title, hero, action pose, background, and composition.
- Students create small rough sketches of their cover ideas (at least 2 options).
- Encourage them to think about perspective—should the hero be flying, leaping, or standing heroically?
- Using their favorite sketch, students draw their superhero in an action pose.
- Guide them on composition, making sure the hero is the main focus.
- Encourage dramatic angles and expressions for an engaging cover.
- Students add details to their superhero’s costume and start filling in the background.
- Explain how to use speed lines, explosions, or cityscapes to enhance action.
- Go over the lines with markers or ink for bold outlines.
- Add colour, focusing on contrast to make the hero stand out.
Here are two cover demos I drew at the awesome JCC “Superheroes at Your Seder” event on April 6, 2025! Kids and families had an absolute blast learning how to draw their own comic book covers. It was such a fun day!
